In a world which seems to have an abundance of accessible content and access, we are nonetheless challenged by the lack of access to our shared legacy; our heritage content kept almost a secret in our broadcast and national archives. In order to understand the world we live in, our current society, many would argue that knowledge about our past is key. We need to benefit from our past to create a better future.

A new approach to film digitization is helping broadcast archives utilize their film collections much faster and cheaper to be the “shoulders” they can stand on to better their organisation’s largely unused and unaccessible treasures of unique content. But how do we do this and is the purpose to improve the service of their users? Or is there also a higher meaning and goal? Can we use the content to make the world a better, more enlightened place (and really fulfill our public service obligations?).

We’re changing they way film digitization has been done for years and through our shared collaborations with BBC, SVT, RTÉ & NISV, we have developed a new inventive approach where the broadcast archives and their teams are empowered through an “insourcing” model which allows both the archive department and the organisation to flourish and become more than 10 times as productive as they where before. This has generated massive value and new insights which are changing both archive and funding strategies.
In this talk I will briefly introduce the key elements in our approach and technology, but more importantly I will share the creative mindset of our collaborators. A mindset, that is made possible due to their impressive results in digitization, and due to their empowerment of their internal teams with both new workflows, technology and priorities to enable an unprecedented productivity, which allows them to change production cycles, and overall access offerings.
