FIAT/IFTA World Conference 2019

The NHK Archives actively uses their preserved contents in their efforts to give back to society. The Internet portal site of the Archives contains 20,000 video clips divided into nine categories, 1. News; 2. Local information; 3. TV programs; 4. People’s profiles; 5. 1964 Tokyo Olympic games; 6. Events depicting the era; 7. War Testimonies; 8. Natural disasters; 9. Material (Downloadable images). Other than these are the following contents.
- The “NHK Teachers’ Library” lends documentaries and general programs in DVD format for classroom usage free of charge. Over 3,200 items have been used so far.
- In the “Academic Use Trial,” we invite university researchers to view our programs to apply in their studies. So far, 168 groups of researchers have used this system and 78 papers have been written.
- The “Reminiscence Therapy Library” is mainly used for elderly people. They are shown videos from the past that bring back memories and then asked to discuss its content, which is said to stimulate their brains and slow the progression of dementia.
- “Open Program Libraries” are placed in 57 facilities such as NHK broadcasting stations throughout Japan and are places where visitors can watch past programs free of charge.
